Dr Di Shand is a Counselling
and Educational psychologist registered with the Health
Professions Council [PS 0030015]. She holds the degrees of D.Ed
[Doctorate in Psychology] M.Ed [cum laude] B.A. [SA], B.Ed
[Remedial] Wits and the Transvaal Teacher’s Higher Diploma.
She has a double internship of
Counselling Psychology, [completed at Weskoppies Mental Hospital
in 1990] and Educational Psychology, [completed at Crossroads
Remedial School in 1989]. She obtained extensive training in
Psychometric assessment and Clinical psychotherapy as well as
valuable experience in individual, marital, family and child
psychotherapy from both institutions. Her Master’s Dissertation
was on Learning Disabilities and her Doctoral Thesis on Anxiety
Disorders and the use of Hypnotherapy as a medium of treatment.
She has presented various
papers at National and International Conferences and has been on
expert panels on television and radio as well as written
articles for various publications.
She has 14 years experience as
a psychologist. She founded and ran the Bryanwood Therapy Centre
in Bryanston for 6 years and was Head of the Trauma Unit there,
specializing in Trauma Debriefing. She is presently in private
practice in Rivonia.
Dr Shand has 20 years
experience in the field of Education at all three levels,
pre-primary, primary and high school. She qualified in her final
year of teaching in Physical Education and taught in South
Africa and Abroad. She prescribes to “A Healthy mind in a
Healthy body” She is a qualified remedial therapist and
psychometrist and has extensive experience working with Learning
Disabled children in remedial schools.
In addition, Dr Shand has
experience in:
* Individual Psychotherapy and
Counselling for adults and children, hypnotherapy, couples and
family therapy [using a Systemic approach], parental guidance,
reconstructive therapy and mediation between divorcing and
divorced couples with regard to assisting them and their
children.
* Forensic Evaluation of Third
Party Claims for Motor Vehicle Accidents, Custody and Access
cases and psycho-legal assessments of adults and children for a
variety of reasons. She has assisted the Office of the Family
Advocate on several occasions in assessment of child custody and
access dispute.
Dr Shand has completed the
Advanced Certificate in Forensic Psychology at
Pretoria University ’04.

developmental assessments of children for school readiness,
emotional difficulties, career counselling and learning
difficulties.
* Assessments and evaluations
of employees for job placements and promotions.
* Dr Shand is a member of the
Psychological Association of South Africa, the South African
Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the Private Practioner’s
Group.
